Youth Group

Youth Group Activities

All youth in grades 7 through 12 are welcome as are their friends. Sunday morning youth group is a time for learning about the day’s scripture, discussion on a variety of topics of interest to the youth and catching up. There is youth group each week from the Sunday after Labour Day until late June.

We have a weekly social activity that usually occurs on Friday evenings, with the occasional social activity held on a Saturday or Sunday instead. Activities may be at the Church or another venue, and we typically meet between 6:30 and 9:30. For events held at St. Thomas we start in the upper hall, and for events away from the Church we meet in the upper parking lot of St. Thomas to arrange rides. Variations to event days or times will be communicated in weekly emails.

If you have any questions or would be interested in receiving emails regarding social activities, check out the youth group registration and information package, talk to Heather, Eden or Caitlin or email youth@stthomasunited.ca. When youth who have not already registered arrive at a social event by their own means, the parent approval form must have been completed by a parent or guardian and brought to the event.

Leaders Heather, Eden, Caitlin, and Matt look forward to seeing you!

Heather Robertson

Heather grew up in the St. Thomas community and has thoroughly enjoyed being a part of the Jr. Choir, Teen Choir, and Youth Group over the years. In June of 2018 she completed her undergraduate degree in English Literature at the University of Calgary. Heather worked with youth at Camp Kasota for four years and now she works at the Vecova Recreation Centre as a lifeguard and swim instructor. She is excited to return for her fourth year working with the youth! "The youth are so positive, creative, and energetic, I can't wait to see what this year has in store for us!"

Matthew has rejoined our youth leader team after a year and half away working in the UK. He has a variety of experience working with Children and Youth. From working as a teaching assistant at a special needs school, to time working as a coordinator at Naramata Centre, to being a youth leader at St. Thomas and Symons Valley. Matthew’s time in the UK helped him realize that he wants to become a teacher. Currently he is taking courses in order to go back to university for an Education degree. He is excited to be rejoining the youth team and try out new programming that he has not done before.

Caitlin Hornbeck

Hi! My name is Caitlin. I was recently hired as one of your youth leaders! I'll be returning to the University of Calgary for my second year, majoring in Sociology. My end goal is to become a Social Worker, but that's a long time (and a lot of studying) away! In my spare time I love to cook, volunteer at animal shelters, and watch movies! I hope to infuse some of my passions into some of the programming we do this year, including intergenerational bonding, Right Relations, and meditation/self care! My home church is Wild Rose United, where I have been attending for about 6 years. Hopefully St. Thomas will become my home away from home!

Some fun facts about me:

1. I love dogs!!! (Small, large, old, young, energetic, grumpy... They're all good doggos!)

2. I'm currently trying to become a vegetarian, but it's been a little challenging for me at times!

3. If I could live anywhere in the world, I would live in Victoria, BC (I love the ocean!)
